Top 10 things to do in Edinburgh

By BZashleigh 06 Sep 2017

Edinburgh is Scotland's capital and multicultural hub with so much to see and do!

Whilst you're here why not explore and see some amazing things? Here are just a few things that this vibrant city has to offer...

  1. Wander the Royal Mile

Technically not a mile (it's 1.81 km!), but this quaint and pretty street in the heart of the city is definitely worth a visit. It's lined with some of the area's oldest shops and cafes and connects the castle to Holyrood Palace.
  2. Take on the climb up Arthur's Seat
One of Edinburgh's most-recognised landmarks, this ancient volcano watches over the city. The views from the top are breathtaking and make the perfect backdrop for that Insta selfie!
  3. Visit Edinburgh Zoo

This 82-acre zoo and park is a must-visit if you're an animal lover! There are 1000s of species to see and it's the home of the only koalas and pandas in the UK! Students get discounted tickets too.
  4. Have a Harry Potter moment
Love all things HP? Visit the exact spot where J.K. Rowling came up with all of the fascinating ideas behind the books and films. The Elephant House Cafe is on George IV Bridge and has become ever popular with tourists.
  5. Visit Edinburgh Castle

This world-famous landmark stands out in the city's skyline. It’s a great way to learn about Scotland’s history and the view from the castle is incredible. Don’t forget to stick around for the 1 o’clock gun fire (1pm Monday - Saturday).
  6. Stroll the sands of Portobello Beach
Granted it's a few miles out of the city centre, but it's definitely worth the trip! This two-mile stretch of golden sand beach is ideal for (when the weather holds out!) a relaxing walk. Why not pick up some fish and chips afterwards too?
  7. Admire the Palace of Holyroodhouse
Enjoy some regal activities as you explore the official Scottish residence of the Queen. See 14 historic apartments, ruins of the 12th-century Holyrood Abbey and the exquisite gardens.
  8. Relax in The Meadows

Edinburgh's version of Central Park, this huge green space is the perfect place to escape to when you need a time-out. Lovely in the summer but very pretty in the winter when it's covered with frost or snow.
  9. Shop on Princes Street

Probably the busiest street in the city, this is where you'll find all of your favourite high-street shops. Shops only line one side of the street and on the other is Princes Street Gardens - home to seasonal markets and celebrations.
  10. Climb Calton Hill

Part of the city's UNESCO World Heritage site, this high-up point provides some of the most spectacular views across the city. You might even recognise it from photographs and paintings.

Enjoy exploring!
